    Amy Kugler understands firsthand how running can help combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Running, then, can be a great antidote. “Running outside, preferably in daylight, creates endorphins that give a runner a happy feeling and greater energy rush,” Stock says.

    Even with a schedule and climate that often prevents her from training in the sunlight, Kugler feels better after training outdoors through winter. And that's no coincidence. A 2016 Harvard and Syracuse University study showed that the elevated levels of carbon dioxide often present in indoor environments can have negative effects on cognitive function. Translation: breathing fresh, oxygen-rich air—not just exposure to sunlight—can positively affect more than just your mood. “Would I love a sunny day?” she asks. “Yes. But more importantly, I am out there, and the endorphins make all the difference.”

Think of your training as a pyramid—your wintertime base miles form the bottom layer on which your other efforts can rest. Skip out on this step and spring training and racing won’t get you nearly as far. The case for winter running couldn’t be stronger.     A mutated version of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus which now dominates the world may be more infectious than the original version. 

    A study of more than 5,000 Covid-19 patients at a hospital in Houston, Texas, revealed that 99.9 per cent of infections were caused by this altered version of the virus, called D614G. 

    The finding adds credence to the theory the mutation, which accounts for 85 per cent of global cases, is more contagious than the original strain.

    D614G is by far the most common strain of coronavirus affecting humans worldwide and first appeared in February in Europe. 

    International travel allowed this variant to spread across the continent and into the Americas, Oceania and Asia within weeks.  

    Scientists are still trying to determine why the D614G strain has become the principle form of SARS-CoV-2, and think it may be due to the mutation increasing the amount of virus in the upper respiratory tract.

    This makes it more likely to spread when the infected person talks, coughs or sneezes.

    In the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the dominant guise of the virus was a variant now called the 'D strain'. 

    However, the D614G mutation sprung up at one specific location, called position 614, on the spike protein of the virus.

    This spike hijacks the human receptor ACE2 and this is how it infects human cells. 

    The location of the mutation sits at a critical juncture which affects how the virus cleaves in half after infiltrating a cell.

    The mutation is very small and simple, one amino acid is changed from a D (aspartate) to a G (glycine), hence the moniker D614G. 

    It is believed the D614G strain emerged first in Europe at the start of February 2020 and spread quickly. 

    As Italians, Britons and others from coronavirus hotspots travelled to Asia, Australia and America, the D614G virus then took hold in these regions. 

    Data from a study published last week shows a spike of the G strain in Europe at the start of February, followed by another resurgence of the G variant a fortnight later. 

    By the start of March, cases of D614G were spotted around the world and this specific mutation made up around a quarter of all cases.  

    It continued to take over and constituted more than 70 per cent of all cases by May, and the number is now thought to exceed 85 per cent.  

    However, in some localised areas the virus is almost ubiquitous. A September study from the US found 99 per cent of cases in a New York hospital were of the G strain, similar to the latest figures from Houston. 

    The latest study, which was was led by the Houston Methodist Hospital and has been published in the peer-reviewed journal mBIO, found that, during the initial wave of the pandemic in the spring, 71 per cent of cases were D614G.  

    By the time the second wave of the outbreak hit Houston during the summer, this variant had leaped to 99.9 per cent prevalence. 

    'The virus continues to mutate as it rips through the world,' says co-author of the Houston study Dr Ilya Finkelstein from the University of Texas at Austin.  

    There is much debate over why the D614G mutation became dominant but the prevailing theory is that it is more infectious than the original version. 

    While the new research does not show a direct link between the amount virus in the upper respiratory tract and the likelihood of it spreading, several studies have hinted that the D614G mutation is more contagious.

    In August, Paul Tambyah, senior consultant at the National University of Singapore and president-elect of the International Society of Infectious Diseases, made headlines when he said D614G makes the virus more infectious but less deadly.

    How one amino acid led to a major mutation in SARS-CoV-2

    The study by the Royal Society's SET-C (Science in Emergencies Tasking – COVID-19) task force also studied the one major mutation SARS-CoV-2 underwent. 

    It is located on the S-protein which sticks out from the surface of the virus. 

    This spike latches on to the ACE2 receptor of human cells, tricks it into opening the cell, and allows the pathogen to infect a person. 

    At one specific location — residue 614 on the S1 terminus — the original form of the coronavirus had the amino acid aspartate, labelled with a D.

    However, a random mutation saw this amino acid replaced with a glycine, labelled with a G. 

    The so-called D614G mutation was seen in barely any samples taken in February. 

    However, by March, more than a quarter (26 per cent) of isolated SARS-CoV-2 strains contained the mutation. 

    By May this figure had reached 70 per cent. 

    The D614G mutation i the most dominant one seen globally. 

    This mutation appears to help more virus infect a person and for more efficient infection of cells. 

    The D614G virus is also almost always accompanied with three other minor mutations. The role  of these changes remains unknown. 

    Many in the scientific community decried his comments as premature and founded in speculation not evidence, but recent research shows he may have been at least partially correct. 

    A study published last week by the University of Texas looked at how the D and G strains compared with each other and how they altered the trajectory of a coronavirus infection. 

    It found the G strain is more infectious and 'enhances viral loads in the upper respiratory tract of COVID-19 patients'.

    The researchers studied the two strains in a laboratory in both hamsters and human cell models. 

    'We demonstrated that the spike substitution D614G enhanced SARS-CoV-2 replication in the upper respiratory tract through increased virion infectivity,' the authors write. 

    'The replication differences were more dramatically observed in the human airway culture, with up to a 13.9-fold advantage in a head-to-head competition test.'  

    The authors of this previous study speculate that the G strain causes more virus to be produced in the nose and throat, but not in the lungs. 

    Reassuringly, however, the researchers believe the mutation is unlikely to impact the effectiveness of a vaccine, echoing the sentiment of two major reports from October and September.

    Viral mutations are common and can make creating vaccines difficult as it causes the virus to change shape, rendering previous vaccines useless, as is the case with seasonal flu. 

    Researchers were concerned that if this was the case for SARS-CoV-2 a new vaccine would be needed for every time the coronavirus mutated. 

    However, a study from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) found the change from the D to G strain will not impact on vaccine effectiveness. 

    If this was to occur, it could mean a new vaccine would be needed every time a new mutation emerged, similar to seasonal flu.      

    Experts are also hopeful that any future mutations will also not impact vaccine efficacy.    

    'Despite this D614G mutation to the spike protein, we confirmed through experiments and modelling that vaccine candidates are still effective, said Professor Seshadri Vasan from CSIRO, who led the study.

    'We've also found the G-strain is unlikely to require frequent "vaccine matching" where new vaccines need to be developed seasonally to combat the virus strains in circulation, as is the case with influenza.'

    WHAT IS AN ACE-2 RECEPTOR AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH COVID-19? 

    ACE-2 receptors are structures found on the surface of cells in the lungs and airways which work with an enzyme called ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) to regulate blood pressure.

    Its exact function in the lungs is not well understood but studies suggest it is protective against lung damage and low levels of it can worsen the impact of viral infections.

    Scientists say that the coronavirus which causes COVID-19 enters the body through the ACE-2 receptor, which the shape of it allows it to latch on to.

    This means that someone with more ACE-2 receptors may be more susceptible to a large viral load - first infectious dose of a virus - entering their bloodstream.

    People who have higher than usual numbers of ACE-2 receptors may include those with diabetes or high blood pressure because they have genetic defects which make them produce more.

    High levels of ACE-2 receptors may also be protective, however.

    They are thought to be able to protect the lungs during infection and a study on mice in 2008 found that mice which had ACE-2 blocked in their bodies suffered more damage when they were infected with SARS, which is almost identical to COVID-19.

    Smoking has in the past been repeatedly linked to lower than normal levels of ACE-2 receptors, potentially increasing the risk of lung damage from COVID-19.

      What if I told you there was something that you can do right now that would have an immediate,positive benefit for your brain including your mood and your focus? And what if I told you that same thing could actually last a long time and protect your brain from different conditions like depression,Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Would you do it? Yes! I am talking about the powerful effects of physical activity. Simply moving your body, has immediate, long-lasting and protective benefits for your brain. And that can last for the rest of your life. So what I want to do today is tell you a story about how I used my deep understanding of neuroscience, as a professor of neuroscience, to essentially do an experiment on myself in which I discovered the science underlying why exercise is the most transformative thing that you can do for your brain today. Now, as a neuroscientist,I know that our brains, that is the thing in our head right now, that is the most complex structure known to humankind. But it's one thing to talk about the brain, and it's another to see it. So here is a real preserved human brain. And it's going to illustrate two key areas that we are going to talk about today. The first is the prefrontal cortex,right behind your forehead, critical for things like decision-making,focus, attention and your personality. The second key area is located in the temporal lobe, shown right here. You have two temporal lobes in your brain,the right and the left, and deep in the temporal lobe is a key structure critical for your ability to form and retain new long-term memories for facts and events. And that structure is called the hippocampus. So I've always been fascinated with the hippocampus. How could it be that an event that lasts just a moment, say, your first kiss, or the moment your first child was born, can form a memory that has changed your brain, that lasts an entire lifetime? That's what I want to understand. I wanted to start and record the activity of individual brain cells in the hippocampus as subjects were forming new memories. And essentially try and decode howthose brief bursts of electrical activity, which is how neuronscommunicate with each other, how those brief bursts either allowed usto form a new memory, or did not. But a few years ago,I did something very unusual in science. As a full professor of neural science, I decided to completely switchmy research program. Because I encountered somethingthat was so amazing, with the potential to change so many lives that I had to study it. I discovered and I experiencedthe brain-changing effects of exercise. And I did it in a completelyinadvertent way. I was actually at the heightof all the memory work that I was doing -- data was pouring in, I was becoming known in my fieldfor all of this memory work. And it should have been going great.It was, scientifically. But when I stuck my headout of my lab door, I noticed something. I had no social life. I spent too much timelistening to those brain cells in a dark room, by myself. (Laughter) I didn't move my body at all. I had gained 25 pounds. And actually, it took memany years to realize it, I was actually miserable. And I shouldn't be miserable. And I went on a river-rafting trip --by myself, because I had no social life. And I came back -- (Laughter) thinking, "Oh, my God,I was the weakest person on that trip." And I came back with a mission. I said, "I'm never going to feellike the weakest person on a river-rafting trip again." And that's what made me go to the gym. And I focused my type-A personality on going to all the exerciseclasses at the gym. I tried everything. I went to kickbox,dance, yoga, step class, and at first it was really hard. But what I noticed is that after everysweat-inducing workout that I tried, I had this great mood boostand this great energy boost. And that's what kept megoing back to the gym. Well, I started feeling stronger. I started feeling better,I even lost that 25 pounds. And now, fast-forward a year and a halfinto this regular exercise program and I noticed something that reallymade me sit up and take notice. I was sitting at my desk,writing a research grant, and a thought went through my mind that had never gonethrough my mind before. And that thought was, "Gee, grant-writing is going well today." And all the scientists -- (Laughter) yeah, all the scientistsalways laugh when I say that, because grant-writing never goes well. It is so hard; you're alwayspulling your hair out, trying to come up with thatmillion-dollar-winning idea. But I realized thatthe grant-writing was going well, because I was ableto focus and maintain my attention for longer than I had before. And my long-term memory --what I was studying in my own lab -- seemed to be better in me. And that's when I put it together. Maybe all that exercise that I had included and added to my life was changing my brain. Maybe I did an experiment on myself without even knowing it. So as a curious neuroscientist, I went to the literature to see what I could find about what we knew about the effects of exercise on the brain. And what I found was an exciting and a growing literature that was essentially showing everything that I noticed in myself. Better mood, better energy,better memory, better attention. And the more I learned, the more I realized how powerful exercise was. Which eventually led me to the big decision to completely shift my research focus. And so now, after several years of really focusing on this question, I've come to the following conclusion: that exercise is the most transformative thing that you can do for your brain today for the following three reasons. Number one: it has immediate effects on your brain. A single workout that you do will immediately increase levels of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline. That is going to increase your mood right after that workout, exactly what I was feeling. My lab showed that a single workout can improve your ability to shift and focus attention, and that focus improvement will last for at least two hours. And finally, studies have shown that a single workout will improve your reaction times which basically means that you are going to be faster at catching that cup of Starbucks that falls off the counter, which is very, very important. (Laughter) But these immediate effects are transient,they help you right after. What you have to do is do what I did, that is change your exercise regime,increase your cardiorespiratory function, to get the long-lasting effects. And these effects are long-lasting because exercise actually changes the brain's anatomy, physiology and function. Let's start with my favorite brain area, the hippocampus. The hippocampus -- or exercise actually produces brand new brain cells, new brain cells in the hippocampus,that actually increase its volume, as well as improve your long-term memory, OK? And that including in you and me. Number two: the most common findings in neuroscience studies, looking at effects of long-term exercise, is improved attention function dependent on your prefrontal cortex. You not only get better focus and attention, but the volume of the hippocampus increases as well. And finally, you not only get immediate effects of mood with exercise but those last for a long time. So you get long-lasting increases in those good mood neurotransmitters. But really, the most transformative things that exercise will do is its protective effects on your brain. Here you can think about the brain like a muscle. The more you're working out, the bigger and stronger your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex gets. Why is that important? Because the prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus are the two areas that are most susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases and normal cognitive decline in aging. So with increased exercise over your lifetime, you're not going to cure dementia or Alzheimer's disease, but what you're going to dois you're going to create the strongest, biggest hippocampus and prefrontal cortex so it takes longer for these diseases to actually have an effect. You can think of exercise, therefore, as a supercharged 401K for your brain, OK? And it's even better, because it's free. So this is the point in the talk where everybody says, "That sounds so interesting, Wendy, but I really will only want to know one thing. And that is, just tell me the minimum amount of exercise I need to get all these changes." (Laughter) And so I'm going to tell you the answer to that question. First, good news: you don't have to become a triathlete to get these effects. The rule of thumb is you want to get three to four times a week exercise minimum 30 minutes an exercise session, and you want to get aerobic exercise in. That is, get your heart rate up. And the good news is,you don't have to go to the gym to get a very expensive gym membership. Add an extra walk around the blockin your power walk. You see stairs -- take stairs. And power-vacuuming can be as good as the aerobics class that you were going to take at the gym. So I've gone from memory pioneer to exercise explorer. From going into the innermost workings of the brain, to trying to understand how exercise can improve our brain function, and my goal in my lab right now is to go beyond that rule of thumb that I just gave you -- three to four times a week, 30 minutes. I want to understand the optimum exercise prescription for you, at your age,at your fitness level, for your genetic background, to maximize the effects of exercise today and also to improve your brain and protect your brain the best for the rest of your life. But it's one thing to talk about exercise,and it's another to do it. So I'm going to invoke my power as a certified exercise instructor, to ask you all to stand up. (Laughter) We're going to do just one minute of exercise. It's call-and-response,just do what I do, say what I say, and make sure you don't punch your neighbor, OK? Music!     Colorado Springs Native Returns to Take the Reins at Trinity Brewing

    Jon Taylor wasn’t much of a craft-beer guy.

    A Colorado Springs native, he’d worked as a line cook at a few restaurants after graduating from Palmer High School, then moved to California’s Bay Area in 2009 for a change of pace. After bouncing around between Oakland and San Francisco, he eventually took a job as a line cook at the famed Magnolia Brewing, a neighborhood pub that opened in 1997 in the Haight-Ashbury district. Known for its English-style ales, Magnolia also brewed other traditional offerings, including a German lager called Kalifornia Kolsch.

    “My first sip of their beer, specifically their Kalifornia Kolsch, I said, ‘You really make this here?’ It was the best beer I’d ever had,” he remembers.

    These days, Taylor, who eventually landed a job as the brewer at Magnolia, is very much a craft-beer guy, and earlier this fall, he moved back to Colorado Springs with his family and took the top job at Trinity Brewing, an eleven-year-old pub near Garden of the Gods, where he plans to change things up...slowly.

    “I’m introducing my style of beers, but I’m also still making people’s favorites,” he explains. For instance, although he will continue to brew Hype Forager, a hazy IPA and a taproom favorite, he also cooked up New Guy IPA, a “nice, clean” West Coast-style IPA (which will be in cans soon). In addition, he's added a hoppy pilsner, a malty red ale, an all-Citra hopped IPA on nitro, and two different pumpkin beers — a pumpkin porter and a pumpkin pale — that can be combined for a pumpkin “black and tan.”

    Trinity Brewing

    It’s a 180-degree turn from the kinds of beers that Trinity’s founder, Jason Yester, made before he sold the brewery in July to Matthew Dettmann, a Colorado Springs restaurateur. Yester was a Belgian-style saison specialist who broke new ground with his use of “wild” Brettanomyces yeast and inspired a new generation of brewers who began experimenting with wild yeast strains, too.

    And while Taylor will continue to make some of Yester’s saisons (he's even called on Yester to help him learn Trinity’s brewing system), he's decided to get rid of the tanks that were used for fermenting wild ales and focus almost entirely on “clean” beers. (Wild yeast can carry earthy or sour flavors that can infect other beers brewed with the same equipment.)

    It’s a decision that comes from experience: After trying his first sip of Kalifornia Kolsch years ago, Taylor began helping out in the brewery at Magnolia. “One guy asked me to help him haul some grain...another to help add fresh hops to a beer. I got a full introduction,” he says.

    Taylor eventually left Magnolia to take a beer-packaging job at nearby Speakeasy Ales. But when that brewery closed, he returned to Magnolia, this time as an assistant brewer.

    Shortly thereafter, Magnolia was purchased by Colorado’s own New Belgium Brewing, with a minority investment from craft-beer pioneer and Elysian Brewery co-founder Dick Cantwell, who took Taylor under his wing. (Cantwell and New Belgium co-founder Kim Jordan are often referred to as one of the industry’s power couples.) “I basically got a huge master class from Dick Cantwell,” Taylor explains, and when Magnolia’s head brewer left, he took over as the primary beer brewer.

    But as the coronavirus pandemic swept through the Bay Area last spring, Taylor, who'd had a daughter the previous December, decided he needed to get out of the city. “I could just see the ocean from the bedroom window of my apartment,” he says, and the sight of the ill-fated, virus-ridden Grand Princess cruise ship docked there was more than he could bear.

    Trinity Brewing

    Cantwell offered to help Taylor get a job at New Belgium in Fort Collins (New Belgium and Magnolia are now both owned by Japanese beer giant Kirin), but Taylor wanted to work at a small brewery like Magnolia, and began looking in Denver and Colorado Springs — eventually getting an offer from Trinity and settling in there.

    Taylor’s hiring comes at a turning point, not just for Trinity, but for Colorado’s entire brewing scene. In May and June, as the Black Lives Matter protests turned the country on its head, many business owners across the country began looking at themselves in the mirror and wondering what they could do to help foster change and encourage diversity.

    Breweries were no different. Dozens publicly stood behind Black Lives Matter, brewing beers to raise money for groups fighting racism and vowing to overhaul hiring policies in an industry that, with only a few exceptions, is very white. In fact, of Colorado’s 420 or so breweries, fewer than twenty are owned by people of color — and only three or four have Black ownership. Those same numbers hold true for the top jobs inside those breweries.

    For Taylor, the lopsided situation is nothing new. He hopes it will change, but in the meantime, he says that brewing knowledge has been a way to cross racial boundaries.

    “It comes down to your knowledge,” he says. “A couple of brewers [from other breweries in Colorado Springs] have come out of their way to stop in and introduce themselves. So I don’t really feel any different from any other brewer out there.

    As I have gotten older and creakier, I have looked for other ways to ease the strain on my joints. Three shovels that are helpful in my clay loam soil include:A wide-bladed shovel with an ergonomic D-handle and extra-wide step that adds a little extra oomph to my effort.A narrow spear head shovel has replaced the old sharpshooter in my arsenal of tools. The pointed tip on the blade slides easily into the soil. Many years ago, I bought an 18-inch shovel for one of my young grandsons to use in the garden. I am short, so this may not be universal, but mine has proved to be invaluable for my use in small spaces or for planting 1-gallon or smaller potted plants. The diminutive size is lightweight.

    If you are interested in starting your own seeds indoors, Skip recommends:Quality lighting, such as high-output fluorescents and LEDs with an inexpensive timer.Seed-starting mat that provides warmth to aid in germination when temperatures are cool.Bottle-cap sprinklers, plastic caps that screw on individual-sized, single-use plastic drink bottles. Lightweight row-cover fabrics for protection of seedlings outdoors. 

    If you seed larger plots of ground, consider a precision seeder that “rolls down the row dropping seeds at the perfect spacing, while covering and firming soil around the seeds. Different seeding plates can be switched out for each size of seed you are planting.” Your back and legs will thank you.

    Weeding can be an onerous chore, but the younger the weeds and the less soil we move eradicating them, the easier the job. Unlike hoes that chop both weeds and soil, stirrup and scuffle types slice young weeds off at ground level or just below with simple back-and-forth motions. The weed seeds still lurking belowground are not moved to the surface where they can germinate.

    Richter also recommends the Cobrahead weeder, especially for ease in removing established weeds. The arched shaft and flattened head can also be used for other gardening tasks. Both hand tools with short handles and long-handle versions are available.

    By-pass pruners with removable, replaceable blades are superior to anvil types, according to the article. Some have rotating handles that might feel awkward at first but place less strain on joints. Curved handsaws that cut on both the push and pull strokes are handy. Keep pruning equipment sharp and oiled. It makes pruning easier and extends the life of the tools.

    I have heard rave reviews from other gardeners about kneeling benches, but it was this article that convinced me to get one. I love it! The kneeling pad is kind to my old knees, the seat is a comfortable sitting height, and the handles make getting up easier. I bought one that was extra sturdy, with a plusher kneeling pad. 

    Save not just water but time by using drip irrigation in your beds and/or collection of container plants. Installing a timer is also helpful. There are some great videos on YouTube that can help.
