Gaza: Hospital services halted, humanitarian aid disrupted, common people trapped in crisis

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has confirmed that health services at Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza are at a standstill. Patients and health workers have been evacuated after Israeli military forces stormed the hospital on 27 December. It was forcibly sent out and its director was taken into custody. WHO chief has appealed for the release of detained doctor Hussam Abu Safia. Some patients were sent to Indonesian hospitals, where there is already a shortage of water, electricity and sanitation. Other patients and health workers are facing very bad conditions. There are continuing obstacles to humanitarian aid delivery to violence-hit areas. UN spokesperson Florencia Soto Nino-Martinez said on Monday that more than 150 attempts to deliver aid to northern Gaza since October have been rejected by Israeli authorities. The aid missions which had been approved earlier have also faced long delays. Between 27 and 29 December, three out of four relief missions were blocked. On Sunday, one mission was successfully carried out, delivering basic medical supplies, food and water to evacuees from Kamal Adwan Hospital. However, despite this the situation is said to be very serious. The UN spokesperson stressed that humanitarian workers must be provided safe, unimpeded access to aid. Looting incidents The humanitarian crisis is being exacerbated by armed groups looting relief supplies. There have been two incidents of looting in southern Gaza in the last three days, with goods loaded in trucks being looted. Such incidents not only impact the availability of essential aid supplies but also highlight the inherent risks to humanitarian aid workers. Meanwhile , restrictions on imports of commercial and humanitarian aid have been imposed by the Israeli military, leading to shortages of food, shelter and winter clothing for families. International action is needed. According to the UN spokesperson, the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank is critical and ordinary Palestinians are dependent on continued support. The UN has urged all parties to respect humanitarian principles so that civilians to ensure their protection and help reach them. Amidst the deep crisis in the Gaza Strip, the international community needs to take immediate steps to provide relief to millions of people in need. An appeal has been made to lift it.
