'Extreme death and destruction': Gazans hope for end of war and better future

Nearly 90 percent of the population in the Gaza Strip has been displaced from their homes. Large numbers of people have been forced to migrate repeatedly to escape Israel's military attacks. Some people have been displaced 10 times or more. Much of Gaza is filled with debris, while Israeli airstrikes and military operations have damaged or destroyed about 60 percent of buildings, including homes, schools and hospitals. Israel's continued aerial bombardment has pushed health services in Gaza to near collapse, and the waste disposal system has collapsed, leading to serious health problems. Environmental and health risks have arisen, and water systems have been severely curtailed. The UN News correspondent in Gaza spoke with displaced people taking shelter in the central enclave of Nusirat, who are hoping to return to their remaining homes and get their lives back on track. Umm Mohammed Hanoun, a woman, Despite dire humanitarian conditions, he is determined to return to the al-Karama settlement in northern Gaza with his family. While he has received the news that his house has been destroyed in a drone strike, he says, "My plan is to remove the debris, put up a tent on my land and settle there again." "I just want to see my house. I hope that Gaza will be rebuilt as it was, and our lives will return to the way they were before."'We deserve a better life than this', says Sami Abu Tahoun, a child displaced from Gaza City "I want to go back to Gaza City for one reason, and that is to meet my father," he said after receiving news of the agreement. The teenager said he had not seen his father since the war forced him to move from the northern part of the Gaza Strip. “When we left our home, I lost something very important in life – my father.” “When my mother asked me to pray, I refused. I wanted to wait until That I don't get the chance to worship with my father."'Extreme death and destruction' Like Sami, another Palestinian, Ayman Abu Radwan, says, "We want to think about our future now. There is enough death and destruction." They have been forced to leave their home in Gaza City and live in a tattered tent in central Gaza. "We are exhausted now. We have endured the heat of summer and the cold and frost of winter Every night I wake up to the screams of a two-week old baby, shivering from the cold. "I hope our circumstances will improve. We deserve a better life than this." Mohammed al-Quqa was displaced from the al-Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City. He says that even if the people of Gaza return to their homes after the ceasefire and the Gaza Strip is rebuilt, the mental suffering will continue. “The biggest suffering will be the psychological situation. The war has gone on too long, and our families, our children have seen things they should never have seen.” UN humanitarian teams ready to step up aid It is anticipated that there will be a significant increase in aid flows into the Gaza Strip – which is in line with the stated terms of the agreement. Throughout the war, humanitarian aid convoys carrying desperately needed goods have been repeatedly blocked. They were delayed or prevented from entering Israeli military checkpoints. (In December, 70 percent of coordinated aid missions were rejected by Israeli officials). The World Food Program (WFP) said on Thursday that it has 80 thousand tons of food items outside Gaza waiting to enter Gaza. This amount of food is enough to feed more than one million people. The UN food aid agency, however, also underlined the importance of unhindered movement to reach those in need.
